Chapter 7 - THE BIRTHDAY PARTY WAS NOT RANDOM

The birthday party was Margaret’s sixty-third.

Haley almost did not attend.

That morning, she had emailed Vanessa:

I need complete company statements before I sign anything else.

Vanessa replied:

Stop threatening everyone.

Haley answered:

I’m asking for records.

At the party Vanessa had already been drinking.

Not drunk.

Looser.

Angrier.

She cornered Haley near the cake.

“You embarrassed me with the bank.”

“I called the bank.”

“Exactly.”

“You increased a line I guarantee.”

“It’s company debt.”

“My name is on it.”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“You don’t even work there.”

“That’s why I need to know why I’m guaranteeing it.”

Kayla overheard.

Margaret overheard.

The family gathered.

Then Vanessa said the sentence she had been carrying for years:

“You want all the control without doing any of the work.”

Haley answered:

“I want no control. I want my name off.”

The wine glass came seconds later.

Kayla had grown up around those roles.

Aunt Haley handled forms.

Mom handled people.

Grandma handled traditions.

When Kayla needed a school trip form notarized, Haley did it.

When she needed help opening a first checking account, Haley helped.

When tuition was short, Vanessa used company credit.

To Kayla, all those things belonged to one invisible category:

adults make it work.

That was why her laughter at the party was so easy.

She saw Haley as the relative who could absorb embarrassment too.

Not because Kayla was born cruel.

May you like

Because teenagers study the hierarchy adults demonstrate.

She had seen everyone treat Haley as durable.
