Chapter 1 - HE IS MY...

Claire Bennett knew humiliation had a sound.
It was not screaming.
It was laughter people tried to hide behind champagne glasses.
Soft.
Polite.
Cowardly.
The ballroom of the Langford Hotel glittered beneath three crystal chandeliers while nearly two hundred guests pretended not to stare at Claire standing alone near the edge of the dance floor.
Her younger sister did not bother pretending.
Amber Bennett stood beside Ryan Cole with a microphone in one hand and a champagne flute in the other.
Twenty-nine.
Blonde.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly pleased with herself.
Ryan had once been Claire’s fiancé.
For fourteen months, Claire had worn his ring.
For eleven of those months, Amber had apparently been sleeping with him.
Now they were announcing their engagement at a charity gala hosted by the Bennett Medical Foundation.
Claire had not wanted to attend.
Her mother insisted.
“People will talk if you hide.”
Claire had almost laughed.
People were talking anyway.
Amber lifted the microphone.
“You look pale, Claire!”
A few guests laughed nervously.
Claire smiled because she had spent twelve years training her hands not to shake during surgery.
Apparently the skill transferred.
Ryan leaned toward the microphone.
“Some women just can’t keep a man.”
That earned a louder reaction.
Not quite laughter.
Not quite shock.
The ugly sound in between.
Claire looked at Ryan.
Thirty-four.
Dark tuxedo.
Expensive watch.
The smile of a man who believed being wanted by two sisters proved something flattering about him.
It did.
Just not what he thought.
Amber stepped closer.
“Still alone?”
Claire’s eyes burned.
For one second, she remembered the night she discovered them.
Ryan’s phone lighting beside her at 2:11 a.m.
Amber’s name.
A message:
I hate watching you sleep next to her.
Claire had not screamed.
She had simply removed the engagement ring and left it beside his phone.
Ryan begged for twenty minutes.
Then, when begging failed, he called her cold.
Three weeks later he moved in with Amber.
Now Amber wanted the public victory too.
Claire looked toward the ballroom doors.
Late.
He was late.
That was unusual.
Daniel Reyes had never once been late to anything important in the nine months she had known him.
Then the doors opened.
The room went silent.
Daniel entered wearing a dark formal suit.
Thirty-six.
Tall.
Controlled.
A black folder tucked beneath one arm.
In his other hand:
white peonies.
Claire’s favorite.
His eyes found her immediately.
The tension left her shoulders before she could stop it.
Daniel walked straight across the ballroom.
Guests moved aside.
Amber lowered the microphone.
Ryan stopped smiling.
Daniel reached Claire.
He kissed her forehead.
“Sorry I’m late, sweetheart.”
Then handed her the flowers.
Claire touched the petals.
“You remembered.”
“I remember everything.”
Amber stared.
Ryan stared harder.
Claire turned toward them.
Something inside her settled.
Not revenge.
Relief.
She smiled.
“Amber…”
Her sister’s mouth opened.
Claire continued.
“Meet my husband.”
Ryan’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers.
It struck the marble floor and shattered.
“Husband?!”
The entire ballroom erupted into whispers.
Amber’s face tightened.
“You’re married?”
Claire nodded.
“Six months.”
“You didn’t tell us?”
“No.”
Amber looked personally offended by the secrecy, which Claire found almost impressive.
Ryan barely heard them.
He was staring at Daniel.
His face had drained pale.
Daniel looked back.
Calm.
Ryan whispered:
“Daniel Reyes…”
Claire noticed immediately.
“You recognize him?”
Ryan did not answer.
Daniel slowly lifted the black folder.
His expression changed.
Not toward Claire.
Toward Ryan.
Cold.
Professional.
Ryan backed one step away.
Daniel opened the folder slightly.
May you like
Then looked directly at Claire’s former fiancé.
“He is my...”
