Claire had not hidden Daniel because she was ashamed.
She hid him because her family treated relationships like public property.
After Ryan left her for Amber, Claire became entertainment.
Her mother asked whether she had been “too focused on surgery.”
Her aunt wondered whether she had “neglected romance.”
Amber told friends Claire was emotionally unavailable.
Ryan repeated it.
Then Claire met Daniel.
He did not ask about Ryan for the first month.
Not once.
He asked about trauma surgery.
Her fellowship.

Why she hated roses.
“Too obvious,” she told him.
“What flower isn’t obvious?”
“Peonies.”
“Those are incredibly obvious.”
“Then white peonies.”
He sent them after her first difficult pediatric case.

Just flowers waiting at the hospital desk.

No family speech.
Claire told herself she would announce it when she felt ready.
Then the gala invitation arrived.
Amber’s engagement celebration had been quietly folded into the foundation event.
