Chapter 3 - THE COMPANY RYAN BUILT WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY

Ryan Cole was chief executive of Helix Surgical Technologies.
A startup that claimed to improve hospital operating-room efficiency through AI-assisted equipment tracking.
Claire knew the company well.
Too well.
She had consulted on one of its early clinical workflow pilots before she and Ryan became engaged.
At the time, Helix was small.
Promising.
Messy.
Ryan was charismatic enough to convince investors that every delay was evidence of ambition.
Then the company grew.
Fast.
Federal hospital contracts.
Private health-system deals.
Millions in procurement revenue.
Daniel’s office began investigating after a whistleblower alleged Helix inflated implementation costs and routed consulting payments through shell vendors tied to procurement officials.
Potential kickbacks.
False certifications.
Procurement fraud.
Nothing proven yet.
That distinction mattered to Daniel.
He repeated it twice to Claire the next morning.
“Ryan is a subject, not a convicted criminal.”
Claire sat across from him in their townhouse kitchen.
“You knew his name before we married?”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I could not discuss an active investigation.”
“Even though I had almost married him?”
Daniel looked pained.
“Yes.”
Claire stood.
“I need air.”
He did not stop her.
That helped.
She walked onto the terrace.
Six months married.
Nine months together.
She trusted Daniel more than she had trusted anyone after Ryan.
Now there was a wall between them built not from infidelity, but secrecy.
Legal secrecy.
Professional secrecy.
Still secrecy.
Daniel came outside five minutes later.
“I never used you for access.”
Claire turned.
“I didn’t ask.”
“You were going to.”
She hated that he was right.
He continued:
“Your relationship with Ryan ended before I knew you personally. When we met at the surgical ethics conference, I had already recused myself from reviewing materials involving your prior consultancy because your name appeared in old project files.”
Claire stared.
“You recused yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Why not just stay away from me?”
Daniel gave a tired smile.
“I tried.”
May you like
She almost laughed.
Almost.
