Chapter 4 - AMBER THOUGHT SHE WON A MAN, NOT AN INVESTIGATION
Amber called Claire forty-three times in three days.
Claire answered none.
Then Amber appeared outside the hospital after Claire finished a fourteen-hour shift.
She looked terrible.
No makeup.
Hair pulled back.
No smugness.
“Please.”
Claire kept walking.
Amber followed.
“Ryan won’t tell me anything.”
“That sounds like your problem.”
“He says Daniel is targeting him because of you.”
Claire stopped.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Daniel met me after the investigation started.”
Amber stared.
That hurt her.
Good.
Not because Claire wanted pain.
Because Amber needed facts.
“He knew?”
“Daniel knew Ryan was under investigation. He could not tell me.”
Amber crossed her arms.
“You still married him?”
“Yes.”
“You trust that?”
“More than I trust the man who slept with my sister.”
Amber flinched.
Then whispered:
“I didn’t know about Helix.”
Claire studied her.
“What did you think Ryan did?”
“He said the company was about to sell.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“To whom?”
“A private equity group.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
“Did he ask you to sign anything?”
Amber looked away.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“What did you sign?”
“A house document.”
“What house?”
Amber whispered:
“His lake house.”
Ryan did not own a lake house.
Not personally.
Claire knew because she once reviewed his financial disclosures during wedding planning.
The Lake Geneva property belonged to Helix Executive Holdings LLC.
Corporate property.
