Chapter 1 - SIGN FIRST

Vanessa Morgan held nine-day-old Emma beside the open living-room window.

Claire saw only the final motion.

Both of Vanessa’s arms swung forward.

The pale-yellow blanket disappeared through the opening.

“Bye-bye, baby.”

Claire stopped in the front doorway.

For half a second her body refused to understand what her eyes had seen.

Then instinct returned.

“EMMA?!”

She ran.

Pain pulled across her abdomen from childbirth nine days earlier.

She ignored it.

The bassinet beside the sofa was empty.

The window was open.

Cold air moved the curtains.

Claire tried to get past Vanessa.

Vanessa stepped into her path.

“Where is she?”

Vanessa lifted a thick property folder.

Then slammed it against Claire’s chest.

“Sign first.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Then I’ll tell you where she is.”

Claire knocked the folder from her hands.

Pages scattered across the floor.

Quitclaim deed.

LLC contribution agreement.

Consent to mortgage.

Claire barely saw the headings.

She slapped Vanessa across the face.

“What did you do to my baby?”

Vanessa touched her cheek.

“Too late.”

Claire spun toward the front door.

It burst open.

Daniel Morgan rushed inside carrying Emma against his chest.

“CLAIRE!”

Claire’s knees almost gave out.

Daniel crossed the room and placed the tightly wrapped newborn into her arms.

Emma was frighteningly still.

Claire touched her face.

Cold.

Her tiny hands.

Colder.

“Please—call an ambulance!”

Daniel already had his phone out.

Claire pulled Emma against her body and rubbed the blanket over her back without uncovering her.

“Come on, baby.”

Daniel gave the dispatcher their address.

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.

She stepped toward the door.

Daniel blocked her.

“No.”

She stared at him.

“Move.”

He looked at the open window.

Then at Emma.

Then back at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t hurt her.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“I saw her come through that window.”

Claire looked up.

Daniel had been walking from the driveway toward the porch when he saw a pale-yellow bundle drop into the dense evergreen hedge beneath the first-floor window.

He ran.

Emma had been caught among the outer branches and blanket.

No visible injury.

But she had been exposed to the cold and shock.

He pulled her free and ran inside.

Vanessa whispered:

“She was fine.”

Daniel stared.

“You threw a nine-day-old baby out a window.”

Vanessa pointed at the papers on the floor.

“I needed Claire to sign.”

The sentence was so calm that even Vanessa seemed to hear how monstrous it sounded.

Sirens approached.

Claire tightened both arms around Emma.

Then asked the question that would eventually explain everything.

“Why did you need my house that badly?”

Vanessa said nothing.

But one page on the floor already contained the first answer.

A lender name Claire had never seen before.

And a deadline.
