Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S FIRST STORY
Vanessa’s first police statement was almost impossible to believe.
She claimed she had not intended to throw Emma outside.
She said Claire was refusing to sign.
She picked Emma up.
Then walked near the window.
Then the baby “slipped.”
Daniel had seen the final motion.
He described two arms extending forward.
Vanessa’s lawyer immediately attacked perception.
Daniel was outside.
Moving.
Looking through landscaping.
Could he be certain?
He answered:
“I saw a blanket leave her hands.”
Then Claire told police what Vanessa said:
“Bye-bye, baby.”
Vanessa denied saying it.
No recording.
No camera conveniently aimed at the window.
The case would not be solved by one clip.
But then police interviewed a delivery driver.
He had been carrying a package toward the neighboring house.
He heard shouting.
Looked over.
Saw Vanessa at the window.
Did not see the exact release.
Then heard Claire scream seconds later.
Another neighbor heard:
“Sign first.”
Again.
Fragments.
Then investigators reviewed Vanessa’s messages.
At 10:02 a.m., to her business partner:
I’ll have the house paper today.
At 10:44:
Claire is emotional enough to sign if I push correctly.
At 11:18:
Need the deed by lunch.
At 11:31, minutes before the incident:
She’s back early.
The messages did not describe harm.
They showed urgency.
Planning.
Confidence that Claire’s postpartum state made her easier to pressure.
Police also recovered the audio from a smart speaker in the living room.
Not a hidden surveillance system.
The device had accidentally captured a short voice-command buffer during the incident because Vanessa had tried to ask for the weather minutes earlier.
The buffer did not contain the throw.
It contained one sentence before Claire entered:
“You’re going to save this family whether you like it or not.”
Vanessa’s lawyer fought its admissibility.
Reasonable.
Even without it, the case had other evidence.
But the sentence supported motive.
Vanessa was not thinking:
I am stealing.
She was thinking:
May you like
I am forcing the correct outcome.
That mindset was central.
