Chapter 9 - EMMA COMES HOME

Emma stayed hospitalized for observation.

Then came home.

Healthy.

Feeding.

Crying normally.

Claire had never loved crying so much.

Every sound meant presence.

The open living-room window remained closed.

Daniel had a contractor inspect it.

Claire hated that.

“It wasn’t the window.”

“I know.”

“Then stop treating the house like it attacked her.”

Daniel stopped.

Good.

They did not install bars.

Did not turn the home into a fortress.

They changed access instead.

Vanessa was prohibited from entering.

Locks changed because she had a key.

Not because windows were evil.

Claire also started therapy.

Not because anyone questioned her parenting.

Because she kept seeing the yellow blanket disappear.

She would stand near the living room and suddenly lose track of time.

Her therapist said:

“You experienced a threat to your newborn nine days postpartum.”

Claire whispered:

“I should’ve been faster.”

“You entered after it happened.”

“I should’ve known.”

“How?”

Claire had no answer.

That mattered.

Self-blame thrives on impossible hindsight.

Daniel had his own reaction.

He woke at night and checked Emma’s breathing.

Then checked again.

The pediatrician told them:

“Follow safe-sleep guidance. Do not turn anxiety into constant intervention.”

They listened.

Protection had to remain useful.

Not become another kind of control.
