People became obsessed with Franklin’s disguise.
Why would a billionaire dress as homeless?
Some called it manipulative.
Some called it admirable.
Franklin called it:
a mistake that revealed something useful.
He wrote a memo to the board.
I entered properties in disguise because I did not trust formal reporting. That itself is evidence of governance failure.
If the chairman must become anonymous to learn how people are treated, the company’s reporting system is already broken.
That mattered.
He did not want the lesson to become:
Billionaires should secretly test employees.
The lesson was:
anonymous people should not need hidden importance to receive basic dignity.
Then Franklin met with outreach partners.
No cameras.
Maria Ellis told him:
“Please don’t turn this into another awareness campaign.”
He almost laughed.
“Understood.”
They redesigned the meal program.
Direct voucher budget restored.
Independent nonprofit administrator.
No restaurant executive allowed to reclassify funds.
Meal access at normal entrances unless genuine safety issue.
No public storytelling without participant consent.
Then Franklin asked:
“How much should we increase the budget?”
Maria said:
“Fix the process first.”
Good answer.
Money without process had already created the problem.
Then one shelter director asked Franklin:
“Would Ryan have stopped if you weren’t his father?”
Franklin answered:
“I don’t know.”
That uncertainty became the moral center.
