Chapter 2 - THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Ryan followed him inside.
“Dad. Dad, wait.”
Franklin did not stop.
The restaurant’s general manager, Claire Donnelly, had already recognized him.
Not from the disguise.
From the eyes.
Franklin had owned part of the building for eleven years.
Claire whispered:
“Mr. Mercer?”
Franklin nodded.
“Please call the police.”
Ryan grabbed his elbow.
“Don’t.”
Franklin turned.
Ryan released him instantly.
The guests outside were already filming.
Franklin hated that.
Not because Ryan looked bad.
Because humiliation had become entertainment before facts had even arrived.
He pointed toward the restaurant manager.
“Ask people not to post anything until the police finish taking statements.”
Ryan stared.
“You’re protecting me?”
“No.”
Franklin’s voice was quiet.
“I’m protecting the truth from becoming content.”
Then Officer Laura Chen arrived.
Franklin gave his statement.
Three strikes with the cane.
One bill thrown.
Public insults.
No visible serious injury.
Pain.
Trembling.
Shoulder soreness.
He declined an ambulance at first, then accepted evaluation when Laura insisted his age made hidden injury worth checking.
Ryan tried to explain.
“He was harassing guests.”
Claire interrupted.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Franklin had entered the outdoor waiting area twenty minutes earlier.
He asked the host:
“Do you still honor the Mercer winter meal vouchers?”
The host said she needed a manager.
That was all.
Ryan arrived moments later.
Saw Franklin.
Recognized only the coat.
Then said:
“Get this garbage away from the entrance.”
Franklin asked:
“Is this how Mercer Hospitality treats people who ask about the meal program?”
That question triggered Ryan.
He believed the old man was trying to embarrass him in front of investors.
Then the cane appeared.
Not Franklin’s.
Ryan had borrowed it from a decorative umbrella-and-cane stand near the restaurant door after seeing Franklin refuse to move.
A stupid, impulsive choice.
Now criminally relevant.
Then Officer Chen asked the obvious question.
“Mr. Mercer, why were you disguised?”
Ryan looked at his father.
Brooke looked too.
Franklin answered:
“I was investigating my own company.”
The private dining room fell silent.
Ryan whispered:
“What investigation?”
Franklin looked at him.
“The one you were never supposed to know about until after tonight.”
Then he turned toward Claire.
May you like
“Cancel the CEO announcement.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
