Chapter 7 - THE BODYGUARD WHO SPOKE

Marcus Bell resigned two days after the restaurant incident.

Then he asked to meet Franklin.

“No lawyer,” Marcus said.

Franklin brought one anyway.

Not to intimidate him.

To protect the record.

Marcus explained the culture around Ryan.

If Ryan entered a property:

clear the driveway.

remove protest signs.

move unhoused people.

hide maintenance carts.

delay staff meals.

make the place look “clean.”

Managers competed to anticipate him.

Ryan rarely gave explicit cruel orders.

He rewarded outcomes.

A general manager who moved a shelter pickup point behind a hotel received a promotion.

A manager who refused to remove a homeless veteran from a heated lobby was criticized for “poor guest instincts.”

Then Marcus described one winter night.

Temperature below ten degrees.

A man with a shelter referral asked to wait inside for transportation.

Ryan was hosting investors.

Manager asked Marcus to remove him.

Marcus did.

Outside.

The man waited twenty minutes.

No injury.

No catastrophe.

Still wrong.

Marcus told Ryan afterward:

“He had nowhere warm.”

Ryan replied:

“Then the city should fix that.”

Franklin closed his eyes.

His company did not have to solve homelessness.

But it did not have to turn warmth into a branding conflict either.

Then Marcus said:

“The thing outside Bell & Ash wasn’t surprising.”

Franklin looked at him.

“The cane?”

“No.”

Marcus swallowed.

“The way he looked at you before he knew.”

That mattered.

The violence was shocking.

The contempt was familiar.

Then Marcus handed Daniel a folder.

Printed incident notes he kept privately because official security reports were often softened.

Not falsified.

Edited.

“Guest removed.”

Instead of:

Ryan demanded elderly man leave lobby after he asked for water.

“Solicitor redirected.”

Instead of:

Woman with shelter voucher sent to loading entrance.

Language as laundering.

Franklin had seen this before in corporate disasters.

Bad behavior becomes administrative vocabulary.

Then Daniel found one note with Franklin’s own name.

Chairman expected Thursday. Clear Michigan Avenue frontage by 4 PM.

Franklin stared.

“My visit caused this?”

Marcus answered:

“Your name did.”

May you like

That was worse.

Even absent, Franklin’s status had become a reason to hide people.
