Chapter 1 - THE CHAIR

Walter Carter saw the glue before Amber saw him.

His new daughter-in-law was crouched beside Hazel’s reserved chair in the private family section of the ballroom, squeezing a clear line of adhesive across the upholstered seat.

Garnet stood beside her with one hand over his mouth, laughing.

Walter stopped three feet behind them.

Garnet noticed him first.

“Don’t ruin the joke, Dad.”

Walter said nothing.

Amber straightened, smoothed her white wedding gown, and walked away with Garnet as if humiliating a sixty-year-old woman at her son’s wedding were a harmless tradition.

Walter waited.

Then he lifted Hazel’s chair.

Swapped it with Amber’s.

Straightened both.

And walked away.

Hours later, the ballroom was full.

Hazel sat safely across the table.

Amber sat beside Garnet, smiling like every room belonged to her.

The MC raised his microphone.

“Bride and groom, please stand!”

Amber pushed herself upward.

A ripping sound cut through the room.

Her dress remained stuck to the chair.

Amber froze.

Guests gasped.

She grabbed the back of her gown.

“What the hell?!”

Then her eyes found Walter.

He raised his champagne glass.

A tiny smile.

Garnet followed her stare.

Realization hit.

Walter stood.

He crossed the ballroom and stopped in front of his son.

“Son… want to know what else I switched?”

Garnet’s face changed.

Amber went still.

Walter reached into his jacket and removed a cream envelope.

He handed it to Garnet.

Inside was the wedding’s final settlement summary.

Garnet stared.

BALANCE DUE FROM COUPLE:

$38,640.

PARENT HOST BALANCE:

$0.

Amber snatched the page.

“That’s impossible.”

Walter answered:

“No. It’s itemized.”

The Carter parents had agreed months earlier to contribute exactly $42,000 toward:

the ballroom,

standard catering,

family guest rooms,

and basic floral décor.

They had already paid it.

Everything beyond that was supposed to belong to Garnet and Amber.

But the venue’s draft settlement the previous week showed another:

$31,900

assigned to:

WALTER CARTER — HOST ACCOUNT.

Walter had not approved those charges.

He had spent three days asking why.

Then the venue controller found the answer.

Someone had changed the wedding’s billing profile from:

PARENT CONTRIBUTION — CAPPED

to:

PRIMARY HOST — OPEN SETTLEMENT.

Walter looked at Garnet.

“You want to tell your mother who changed it?”

Garnet said nothing.

Amber stared at the page.

Then Walter added:

“And the thirty-eight thousand isn’t the interesting part.”

He turned the sheet.

A line had been highlighted.

REFERRAL COMMISSIONS / VENDOR CREDITS:

$17,480.

PAYABLE TO:

AMBER VALE EVENTS LLC.

Hazel looked up sharply.

Amber had never told anyone she was being paid commissions from vendors at her own wedding.
