Chapter 12 - THE SPEECH
Originally, Garnet asked Walter to give a father-of-the-groom speech.
Then Amber asked him to keep it under two minutes.
Why?
Her business launch reel had a tight edit schedule.
Walter agreed.
After discovering the chair prank and billing changes, he removed himself from the speech list.
He did not replace it with revenge.
He gave the time to Hazel.
Without telling Garnet.
That was the final switch.
The MC announced:
“Hazel Carter would like to say a few words.”
Garnet looked terrified.
Amber whispered:
“Walter.”
Walter said:
“She’s your mother.”
Hazel stood.
She held no pages.
For one second Walter worried.
Then Hazel said:
“I was told weddings are about joining families.”
Amber stared.
Hazel continued:
“I think that is too large a promise for one day.”
The room quieted.
“A wedding can start a marriage. It cannot manufacture respect.”
Garnet looked down.
Hazel did not mention:
glue,
money,
vendor credits,
or humiliation.
No public shaming.
Then:
“My wish for Garnet and Amber is simple. Ask before you decide for each other. And when someone says no, do not treat it as the beginning of negotiation unless they invite one.”
Walter felt something in his chest loosen.
Then Hazel raised her glass.
“To the marriage after the wedding.”
Guests drank.
That was all.
Amber cried.
Not theatrically.
Quietly.
Then after the speech, she approached Hazel.
“I’m sorry.”
Hazel nodded.
“You said that.”
“I mean it.”
“I believe you mean it now.”
Amber waited.
Hazel did not add:
I forgive you.
Then Garnet apologized too.
Hazel asked:
“For what?”
He listed:
laughing at the chair,
using Walter’s PIN,
moving family travel,
telling Neil to shoot around her no.
Specific.
Then Hazel asked:
“Why did you think I needed to be easier?”
Garnet answered:
“Because every time you questioned something, I felt like I was failing.”
Hazel looked sad.
“I asked questions because I thought you were making decisions.”
He laughed bitterly.
“I was trying not to.”
There.
Then the wedding ended.
No dramatic cancellation.
No annulment.
Amber and Garnet were married.
The real question became:
what kind of marriage had just begun?
Then three days later, Amber received an email from Maribel Tableworks.
They were terminating her referral agreement.
Why?
Not because of the chair.
Because Maribel’s compliance team reviewed:
undisclosed related-party payer structure
and
image-release confusion.
