Chapter 2 - CLAIRE AT SIXTEEN
Claire became pregnant at sixteen.
The father was seventeen-year-old Evan Carter.
They were not star-crossed lovers.
They were teenagers.
They dated for nine months.
Fought constantly.
Loved each other in the intense, unfinished way teenagers sometimes do.
When Claire missed her period, she hid it for six weeks.
Then her mother found the pregnancy test.
The Morgan household changed overnight.
Her father said:
“This does not become your life.”
Her mother cried.
Evan wanted to keep the baby.
At first.
Then his parents panicked.
College.
Money.
Reputation.
Two frightened families began discussing Claire’s future as though she were not in the room.
Adoption became the plan.
Claire resisted.
Then resistance became exhausting.
Every argument ended with:
“You are sixteen.”
“We know what adulthood costs.”
“You’ll ruin your life.”
Eventually Claire signed.
Legally, the adoption was valid.
She had counsel.
There was a waiting period.
No forged papers.
No kidnapped baby.
But lawful consent can still exist inside enormous family pressure.
The adoptive parents were David and Ellen Carter.
Good people, according to every report Claire later received.
They named the baby Samuel Evan Carter.

Claire held him for forty minutes after birth.
The old photograph was taken during that time.
