Chapter 9 - EVAN CARTER
Leo asked about Sam’s father.
Claire hesitated.
Then told him.
Evan Carter had died when Sam was twelve.
A construction accident.
Sam had met him once before that.
Why only once?
Evan handled the adoption differently from Claire.
He regretted signing almost immediately.
At nineteen he wrote to the agency.
At twenty-two he asked for contact.
The adoption was closed.
David and Ellen received letters but chose, within the agreement and advice available then, to wait until Sam was older.
At eleven, Sam asked about Evan.
A supervised meeting occurred.
It went badly.
Evan cried too much.
Told Sam:
“I should have fought harder.”
That placed adult grief onto a child.
Sam withdrew.
A year later Evan died.
Claire carried guilt about that too.
She had never tried to involve Evan in her later search.
Now it was impossible.
Leo said:
“So everybody waited too long.”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
That became another family pattern.
