Chapter 8 - SAM DOES NOT WANT A BROTHER YET

Leo wanted to contact Sam immediately.

Guilt made him urgent.

Claire stopped him.

“He deserves an apology.”

“Yes.”

“So let me apologize.”

“You will.”

“Then give me his number.”

“No.”

Leo exploded.

“He’s my brother!”

Claire stared.

“That is biology. It is not access.”

Leo froze.

Claire continued:

“Sam spent twenty-three years building a life without us. He gets to choose what contact means.”

Leo hated that.

Guilt wanted a task.

Apologize.

Be forgiven.

Feel better.

Waiting offered no relief.

Claire contacted the adoption intermediary.

Sam replied:

I’ll accept a written apology. No meeting yet.

Leo wrote six drafts.

The first:

Sorry if I offended you.

Claire crossed out if.

Second:

I was angry about the order.

Claire said:

“That explains mood. Not behavior.”

Third:

I treated you like your job made you less important. I shoved you and hit your arm. You did not deserve that. I am sorry. I do not expect you to forgive me or meet me.

Claire said:

“Send that.”

Sam replied three days later.

I received it.

Nothing more.

Leo stared at the message.

“That’s it?”

“That’s what he owes you.”

Nothing.

Sam also corrected Claire once.

She said:

“I’m so sorry Leo did that to you.”

Sam answered:

“Because he’s your son?”

Claire paused.

“Because anyone did.”

“Good.”

Then he added:

“I don’t want every bad thing that happens to me to become part of your motherhood story.”

That hurt.

Claire understood.

She had already spent twenty-three years interpreting Sam through:

loss,

guilt,

adoption,

what-if.

He was asking for something else.

Ordinary adulthood.

A bad shift could just be a bad shift.

May you like

A rude teenager could just be a rude teenager.

Not every event needed to become evidence that Claire had failed him at sixteen.
