Chapter 5 - WHY CELESTE THOUGHT ELENA WAS BROKE
Celeste believed Elena’s wealth had collapsed because Victor told her it had.
That did not make her innocent.
It made her reckless.
Elena learned this during a mediated meeting.
Celeste arrived in white silk and anger.
“You humiliated me.”
Elena almost laughed.
“You poured soup on me?”
“That was Victor.”
“You laughed.”
Celeste looked away.
Maya asked:
“What did Victor tell you about Elena’s finances?”
Celeste folded her hands.
“That the trust had liquidity problems.”
“True?”
“No,” Elena said.
Maya lifted a finger.
“Let her answer.”
Celeste continued.
“He said the surgery triggered covenant issues.”
“What covenants?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you verify?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Victor manages finance.”
Elena stared.
“No. Victor runs a hospitality company that lost money for three years.”
Celeste snapped:
“He is your brother.”
“Stepbrother.”
“That distinction never mattered before.”
Elena leaned forward.
“It mattered when you put his debt against my property.”
Celeste’s face changed.
She knew more about that.
Maya saw it too.
“What did you sign?”
Celeste said nothing.
Maya placed a copy on the table.
A lender acknowledgment.
Celeste Mercer, acting as interim family representative, certified that Elena had “consented in principle” to use Hale properties as backstop collateral.
Elena stared at her.
“You signed this?”
Celeste whispered:
“Victor said you agreed.”
“When?”
“In the hospital.”
“I was on morphine.”
“You were lucid.”
“Sometimes.”
Celeste started crying.
That did not move Elena the way it once would have.
People often cry when consequences make self-image difficult.
Maya asked:
“Did you hear Elena personally approve the collateral?”
Celeste looked down.
“No.”
