Chapter 2 - WHAT THE MESSAGE SAID
The notification was from Belmont Private Bank.
ACCOUNT ACCESS REVOKED.
AUTHORIZED USER STATUS TERMINATED.
ASSET TRANSFER HOLD IN EFFECT.
Vanessa read it three times.
Then another message appeared.
VAULT ACCESS SUSPENDED.
Then:
MERCER RESIDENTIAL TRUST—GUEST PRIVILEGES TERMINATED PENDING REVIEW.
Richard stared over her shoulder.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
“You can’t do that.”
Evelyn raised one eyebrow.
The tablet remained on her lap.
Richard stepped forward.
“Evelyn.”
She did not look at him.
He tried again.
“What did you do?”
She turned the tablet.
A sentence filled the screen in large black letters.
I REVOKED WHAT WAS NEVER YOURS.
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
“You gave me those accounts.”
Evelyn typed again.
TEMPORARY AUTHORIZED USER.
Another line.
NOT OWNER.
Richard’s expression changed.
That distinction mattered.
Vanessa had spent four years using a supplementary card connected to Evelyn’s private banking profile.
Richard had described it as “family access.”
Vanessa called it “my account.”
Evelyn had never corrected her strongly enough.
That mistake had become entitlement.
The jewelry was worse.
Most of it did not belong to the marriage.
It came from Evelyn’s maternal family.
Some pieces were owned personally.
Others sat inside the Mercer Heritage Trust.
Vanessa had no claim.
Richard knew.
