Chapter 3 - THE ACCIDENT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Evelyn’s injuries came from a car crash.
Three weeks earlier.
Rain.
A highway merge.
A truck crossing lanes.
The police report called it unavoidable.
Evelyn survived with facial fractures, a concussion, two broken ribs, and a complicated leg injury.
She woke in the hospital unable to speak because surgeons wired her jaw.
Richard took charge.
At first, Evelyn felt grateful.
He handled insurance.
Household bills.
Visitors.
Medical paperwork.
Then small things changed.
Her phone disappeared for two days.
Vanessa began answering messages “for her.”
Richard told staff not to bother Evelyn with business matters.
A rehabilitation specialist recommended home therapy.
Richard insisted a facility would be “safer.”
Then Evelyn discovered he had canceled one meeting with her private trust attorney.
Without asking.
That was the first red flag.
The second came when Vanessa entered Evelyn’s bedroom wearing her emerald earrings.
Evelyn pointed.
Vanessa laughed.
“Dad said it’s fine.”
Richard later said:
“Don’t obsess over jewelry right now.”
Evelyn could not argue.
Not aloud.
So she started writing.
At first on paper.
Then the tablet.
That was when she noticed people spoke differently around someone they believed could not respond quickly.
They became careless.
Vanessa complained openly about waiting for “the transfer.”
Richard told her:
“Not yet.”
Vanessa asked:
“How long?”
Richard answered:
“Until the capacity paperwork is done.”
Evelyn stopped breathing when she read his lips.
Capacity paperwork.

That was not about rehabilitation.
That was about control.
