Chapter 9 - THE CONSEQUENCES
The jewelry theft created one case.
The attempted financial control created another.
Richard faced civil claims, fiduciary litigation, and eventual criminal exposure tied to forged authorizations discovered during the audit.
Vanessa faced theft-related charges and accepted a plea requiring restitution and probation.
She did not go to prison.
Evelyn supported that result.
Not because Vanessa deserved no consequences.
Because consequences should fit conduct.
Richard’s case was worse.
He had copied Evelyn’s signature onto a private-bank instruction letter.
He had also submitted false statements about her medical capacity to a lender.
Those actions cost him his company.
Not because Evelyn destroyed it.
Because lenders stopped trusting documents carrying his name.
The marriage ended.
Quietly.
No screaming.
No final confrontation.
Richard signed the settlement in a conference room while Evelyn sat across from him, jaw wires finally removed.
He said:
“I thought I was saving everything.”
Evelyn’s voice was still weak.
“You were saving yourself.”
He looked at her.
She continued:
May you like
“And you decided I was cheaper.”
That was the last private conversation they had.
