Chapter 6 - RICHARD'S MOTIVE

Richard was not after diamonds.
He was after time.
His construction company, Mercer Urban Development, was failing.
Not publicly.
Privately.
Two projects had stalled.
A lender called a covenant.
A partner threatened suit.
Richard needed nearly $4.8 million within thirty days.
Evelyn had money.
But most was protected inside separate trusts.
He could not simply take it.
He asked her for a loan two months before the accident.
She said no.
Not because she wanted him ruined.
Because his books did not make sense.
She wanted an independent audit first.
Richard called that betrayal.
Then the accident happened.
Suddenly Evelyn was injured.
Silent.
Dependent.
And surrounded by paperwork.
Richard saw opportunity.
He did not cause the crash.
Investigators found no evidence of that.
Important.
He exploited what happened afterward.

Different betrayal.
