Chapter 10 - WHAT VANESSA WANTED
Vanessa’s motive was not one secret affair.
Not money.
Not inheritance.
Control.
But even that needed detail.
When Vanessa married Michael, she believed Emily would eventually accept her.
Emily did not.
She remained polite at first.
Then increasingly resistant.
Vanessa interpreted every boundary as rejection.
She told a friend:
I do everything for that child and she reports me to Michael like I’m staff.
Another:
Michael gets soft whenever Emily cries.
Another:
If I don’t document everything, she’ll split this marriage.
That fear became her justification.
At first Vanessa saved real screenshots.
Then cropped them.
Then trimmed audio.
Then wrote summaries before conflicts fully ended.
Why?
Because she believed Emily manipulated Michael emotionally.
Vanessa wanted her own evidence to compete.
Then evidence became narrative.
Narrative became control.
She stopped documenting what happened.
She started building what Michael would believe happened.
The incident reports did not begin as a plan to abuse Emily.
Vanessa’s friend, Laura Dean, later provided messages that complicated the motive further.
Vanessa had complained for months:
Emily watches me like she’s waiting to report something.
Another:
Michael turns into guilty divorced dad every time she cries.
Another:
I’m the one actually raising her and she still treats me like temporary staff.
There was resentment.
But also insecurity.
Vanessa wanted the authority of a parent without accepting that Emily might never experience her as a mother.
Every time Emily said:
You’re not my mom,
Vanessa heard humiliation.
She responded by proving she had power.
Take the phone.
Take the key.
Take the privacy.
Write the report.
Make Michael enforce it.
Authority became the substitute for belonging.
That did not excuse cruelty.
