Chapter 13 - THE INVESTIGATION
A child-welfare investigation opened after school and medical reports were submitted.
Vanessa denied systematic abuse.
She admitted:
taking devices,
grabbing Emily’s arms during conflicts,
one slap,
and throwing the phone.
She called them:
isolated losses of temper.
Investigators examined the broader pattern.
Communication restriction.
Edited records.
False medication accusation.
Counselor interception.
Physical intimidation.
The finding did not say every disagreement was abuse.
Emily had broken rules.
Lied once about going to a friend’s house.
Used a second social-media account after being restricted.
Said cruel things.
That mattered.
A teenager could misbehave and still be abused.
Vanessa’s strongest defense was that Michael had approved many consequences.
True.
Phone confiscation.
Grounding.
Restricted outings.
Michael had agreed.
But he agreed based on summaries Vanessa manipulated.
And approval of discipline did not authorize:
physical assaults,
fabricated evidence,
or blocking legitimate safety disclosures.
Responsibility remained layered.
The child-welfare investigator asked Emily whether Michael had ever hit her.
“No.”
Threatened her?
“No.”
Prevented her from calling for emergency help?
“No.”
Then:
“Did he believe Vanessa when you said she was hurting you?”
Emily looked at the floor.
“Yes.”
That distinction mattered.
Michael was not accused of the same physical conduct.
But failure to believe repeated disclosures had consequences.
The investigator’s report criticized his overreliance on Vanessa’s summaries and inadequate direct check-ins.
Michael read every word.
