Chapter 7 - THE ROUTER
Emily’s strongest evidence did not come from a hidden camera.
It came from the router.
Michael had installed a family network system with parental controls.
Every device connection generated:
device ID,
connection time,
disconnection time.
Vanessa’s incident summaries often included exact claims.
Emily used phone secretly after midnight.
Emily was messaging friends at 1:14 a.m.
Emily refused to hand over tablet at 11:40 p.m.
The network logs told a different story.
On six dates, Emily’s phone had been offline hours before Vanessa claimed she was using it.
On two, the phone was connected to Vanessa’s bedside charging station.
How did Emily know?
She had stumbled onto the router dashboard while trying to reconnect her school Chromebook.
She began taking screenshots.
Then saving them to a private school account.
Vanessa found the screenshots after checking Emily’s phone.
That was why she became more aggressive.
Emily had moved from protesting the stories to testing them.
Michael asked:
“Why didn’t you send these to me?”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“You blocked my school email after she said I was bypassing rules.”
Michael closed his eyes.
He had done that.
Vanessa told him Emily was using school accounts to evade discipline.
Michael believed her.
He had helped close his daughter’s last independent communication channel.
The router logs also exposed a pattern around Michael’s travel.
Vanessa’s harshest incident reports clustered on nights he stayed in hotels.
Monday trips.
Thursday overnights.
Quarter-end travel.
Emily had noticed before anyone else.
She wrote in her timeline:
She does the biggest stuff when Dad is at least two hours away.
Michael hated reading that.
Not because distance caused Vanessa’s conduct.
Because his schedule made immediate verification unlikely.
Vanessa could send a summary.
Michael would call angry.
Emily would defend herself while already emotional.
Then the event ended before Michael came home.
No neutral reset.
No shared observation.
By the time he returned, Vanessa’s written version had become the official memory.
Travel did not create the abuse.
But it created informational asymmetry.
