Chapter 10 - THE BOARDROOM WAR

Vanessa denied the account was hers.

The documents said otherwise.

Hale Atlantic’s emergency board meeting began at nine the next morning.

Martin Vale sat at the head of the table.

Sixty-three, silver-haired, calm, almost paternal.

He looked at Emma.

“I’m sorry it came to this.”

Emma placed the offshore documents on the table.

“Who gave you these?”

“Anonymous whistleblower.”

“Convenient.”

Martin nodded.

“Extremely.”

Vanessa’s attorney challenged the documents.

Tyler challenged the transfer metadata.

Richard challenged everyone.

The board watched the Hale family tear itself apart.

Martin finally raised a hand.

“This is precisely why we need temporary leadership.”

Richard glared.

“You’ve wanted my chair for thirty years.”

Martin smiled.

“If I wanted your chair, Richard, I could have taken it during any of the six scandals I buried for you.”

The room went silent.

Emma looked at him.

“What scandals?”

Martin sighed.

“Your father was a brilliant businessman.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No.”

Martin turned toward Richard.

“Do you want to tell her?”

Richard said nothing.

Martin continued.

“Illegal campaign contributions. Regulatory bribery. Labor intimidation. Foreign customs payments.”

Emma felt sick.

Vanessa looked unsurprised.

Tyler looked vindicated.

Martin said, “I spent half my life cleaning up after Richard.”

Richard snapped, “You benefited from every dollar.”

“Yes.”

Martin did not flinch.

“That’s the difference between us. I admit what I was.”

Emma studied him.

Another intelligent opponent.

Another person with an argument.

Martin proposed removing Richard as chairman until the financial investigation ended.

Vanessa supported it.

Emma looked at her.

“You’re voting with him?”

“I’m voting to protect the company.”

“My father founded it.”

“And that does not give him the right to burn it down.”

Richard whispered, “Traitor.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You taught me that sentiment is not governance.”

The vote began.

Five for removal.

Four against.

Tyler held a proxy for one shareholder.

He voted against.

Five-five.

Everyone looked at Emma.

Richard had transferred a small voting block to her years earlier.

Her vote would decide it.

Richard said, “Emma.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Martin said nothing.

Emma looked at her father.

Then at the evidence.

“I abstain.”

Richard stared at her.

The motion failed without a majority.

Martin nodded slowly.

“Interesting.”

After the meeting, Emma followed Martin into his office.

“Samuel Carter.”

Martin stopped.

“What about him?”

“You ran security when he died.”

Martin turned.

“Yes.”

“Vanessa says her police statement disappeared.”

“I know.”

Emma’s pulse quickened.

“Who removed it?”

Martin looked at her for a long moment.

“Your father.”

Emma stared.

“He says he didn’t know Vanessa was there.”

“Then he’s lying.”

“Proof?”

Martin opened his safe.

He removed an old cassette tape.

“Samuel recorded his last conversation.”

Emma took it.

“Why do you have this?”

“Because Richard ordered me to destroy it.”

“And you didn’t?”

Martin smiled faintly.

“I learned from your father.”

Emma found an old player in the media room.

She inserted the tape.

Samuel Carter’s voice crackled through the speaker.

Then Richard’s.

Then a third voice.

Emma froze.

May you like

She knew it.

Her mother.
