Chapter 13 - THE BULLET

Richard fell.

Emma screamed.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

Tyler tackled Martin.

The gun slid across the concrete.

Vanessa kicked it away.

For several seconds, the warehouse became pure violence.

Tyler hit Martin.

Martin hit back.

Emma pressed her hands against Richard’s wound.

Laura called emergency services.

Vanessa grabbed the gun.

“Enough!”

Everyone stopped.

She aimed at Martin.

Martin smiled through blood.

“Go ahead.”

Vanessa’s hands were steady.

“You think I won’t?”

“I think you’re too intelligent.”

Martin nodded toward the security camera.

“You shoot an unarmed man in front of witnesses and cameras, you lose everything.”

Vanessa stared.

Then lowered the gun.

Martin laughed.

“Exactly.”

Emma looked at Vanessa.

For all her cruelty, Vanessa still calculated consequences.

Police sirens approached.

Martin’s smile disappeared.

He ran toward the rear exit.

Tyler started after him.

Emma shouted, “Let him go!”

Tyler stopped.

Martin vanished.

Richard survived surgery.

Police issued a nationwide warrant.

Laura gave a formal statement.

Vanessa was investigated for the medication scheme.

Tyler turned over every record from his internal investigation.

Emma thought the worst was over.

Then Richard asked to speak with her alone.

“I need you to destroy something.”

Emma stared.

“No.”

“You don’t even know what it is.”

“That sentence is enough.”

Richard handed her a key.

“Safe deposit box 417.”

“What’s inside?”

“The original ledger.”

Emma’s pulse quickened.

“The one everyone has been looking for?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you have it?”

“Because I never trusted Martin.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“You trusted him enough to commit crimes together.”

“Yes.”

Richard did not defend himself.

“If that ledger becomes public, Hale Atlantic may collapse.”

“Maybe it should.”

“Twenty-two thousand people work for us.”

“There’s your favorite argument.”

“It remains true even when you hate it.”

Emma looked at him.

Richard continued.

“Justice feels simple when you count villains. It becomes harder when you count employees, pensions, families, suppliers.”

Emma hated him for making sense.

“You’re asking me to hide crimes.”

“I’m asking you to decide what truth costs.”

Emma took the key.

Richard relaxed.

She said, “I didn’t say I’d destroy it.”

His expression changed.

Emma walked out.

In the hallway, Vanessa waited with two detectives.

She looked at the key.

“You found the ledger.”

Emma said nothing.

May you like

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Now you understand why everyone wants you.”
