Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO LEFT

Emma had been told her mother left because she could no longer live with Richard.
That was true.
It simply was not the whole truth.
Laura Hale had discovered Richard’s bribery network.
Samuel Carter had contacted her.
They planned to expose it together.
The tape captured their final meeting.
Samuel: “If anything happens to me, release everything.”
Laura: “Richard knows.”
Samuel: “Then we move tonight.”
Richard’s voice interrupted.
“You’re not moving anything.”
The tape became chaotic.
Shouting.
A crash.
Then silence.
Emma stopped the recording.
Richard sat across from her.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill Samuel?”
“No.”
“Did Mom?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Richard rubbed his face.
“Samuel left.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“With the evidence?”
“Some of it.”
“Then why did his car go over the river barrier?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“You’ve used that sentence a lot.”
“Because it’s true.”
“Where is Mom?”
Richard looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
“She left twenty years ago and you never found her?”
“I stopped looking.”
“Why?”
“She threatened to take you.”
Emma stared.
“So you threatened her first.”
Richard said nothing.
Emma stood.
“You made me believe she abandoned me.”
“She did leave.”
“You gave her a choice between staying with you or losing me.”
Richard’s eyes lowered.
Emma walked away.
Tyler found her outside.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She glared at him.
He shrugged.
“People say ‘I’m fine’ when they want everyone to stop asking.”
Despite herself, Emma almost smiled.
Tyler handed her a folder.
“What’s this?”
“The offshore transfer.”
“I’ve seen it.”
“Not this version.”
He had traced the routing.
The money passed through three shell companies.
The final authorization originated from Martin Vale’s executive credentials.
Emma stared.
“Martin framed Vanessa.”
“Looks like it.”
“Why?”
“Maybe he wants the company.”
Emma shook her head.
“Too simple.”
Tyler agreed.
“Martin already has influence. If Richard falls, he becomes interim chairman. But forty million dollars isn’t enough reason to create all this.”
Emma looked at the tape.
“What if this isn’t about the company?”
“What is it about?”
“Twenty years ago.”
They returned to Martin’s office.
Empty.
His computer was gone.
The safe was open.
Emma called him.
No answer.
Then she saw a photograph on the desk.
Richard.
Martin.
Laura.
Samuel.
All four standing together at a Hale Atlantic charity event.
On the back, someone had written:
FOUR PEOPLE KNEW.
ONE DIED.
ONE DISAPPEARED.
TWO BUILT AN EMPIRE.
Emma turned to Tyler.
“Martin didn’t just cover it up.”
May you like
Tyler’s expression darkened.
“He was part of it.”
