Chapter 12 - THE ARCHITECT

Martin disappeared for thirty-six hours.

Then he called Emma.

“Come alone.”

“Where?”

“Warehouse Six.”

Emma almost laughed.

“Why would I do that?”

“Because your mother is alive.”

Silence.

Emma’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Prove it.”

A woman’s voice came over the line.

“Emma?”

Emma stopped breathing.

Older.

Soft.

Familiar in a way that hurt.

“Mom?”

Martin returned.

“Come alone.”

Emma did not.

She brought Tyler.

Vanessa followed them despite being told not to.

Richard secretly followed Vanessa.

By midnight, all four arrived at Warehouse Six.

Martin stood beneath an industrial light.

Beside him sat Laura Hale.

Alive.

Emma stared at her mother.

Laura stood.

Emma could not move.

Twenty years of anger collided with one impossible moment.

Laura whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“You don’t get to start there.”

Martin smiled.

“Family later.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You staged the crash.”

“Yes.”

Richard went still.

Martin continued.

“I needed Richard frightened and medically weakened.”

Emma looked at Vanessa.

“The drugs?”

Martin shook his head.

“Vanessa did that herself.”

Vanessa did not deny it.

Richard stared at her.

She said, “You were becoming impossible to control.”

“You sedated me.”

“Yes.”

“Against my will.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s voice remained steady.

“And I will answer for it. But I did not try to kill you.”

Martin applauded slowly.

“See? This is why Vanessa is useful. She tells the truth once lying becomes inefficient.”

Vanessa glared at him.

Tyler said, “You used my SUV.”

“Yes.”

“You used my father.”

“Yes.”

Tyler moved toward him.

Martin raised a gun.

“Stay.”

Everyone froze.

Emma asked, “Why?”

Martin looked at Richard.

“Because Hale Atlantic should never have belonged to him.”

Richard laughed.

“We built it together.”

“No.”

Martin’s voice sharpened.

“I built the systems. I made the relationships. I protected you. You became the legend.”

Richard stared.

“This is jealousy?”

“Don’t insult me.”

Martin looked at Emma.

“This is correction.”

He explained that Samuel had discovered both Richard’s corruption and Martin’s role in it.

Laura wanted to expose them.

Martin stopped Samuel.

Not Richard.

Martin.

Tyler’s face went pale.

“You killed my father.”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

“Stop playing with words.”

“I confronted him. We fought. He escaped.”

“Then?”

“I followed.”

Tyler’s fists tightened.

Martin continued.

“Samuel lost control of his car near the river.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Martin smiled sadly.

“I expect you to understand that the difference between murder and responsibility becomes very thin when powerful men start protecting themselves.”

Richard looked at him.

“You covered it up.”

“So did you.”

“I thought Samuel killed himself.”

“You believed what was useful.”

Emma looked at Laura.

“Why did you disappear?”

Laura answered.

“Martin threatened you.”

Emma stared at Martin.

He shrugged.

“Effective leverage.”

Emma’s grief became fury.

“You kept my mother away for twenty years.”

“I kept the empire stable.”

May you like

Richard lunged.

The gun fired.
