Chapter 1 - DON'T MAKE ME SAY IT

Claire Morgan pointed at Emma’s backpack the moment her daughter walked into the kitchen.

“Give me your bag.”

Emma hugged it against her chest.

“No.”

Claire stopped.

Emma never said no like that.

Not to homework checks.

Not to lunch containers.

Not to anything involving school.

“Emma.”

“No!”

Claire reached for the backpack.

Emma twisted away.

Claire caught the strap and pulled.

The bag slipped free.

Emma grabbed for it.

Her sleeves dragged back.

Dark bruises circled both forearms.

Claire froze.

The backpack hit the floor.

She gently caught Emma’s arms.

“Who did this to you?”

Emma yanked away.

“Nobody.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

Emma backed toward the counter.

Her eyes filled.

Claire pointed at the bruises.

“Who hurt you?”

Emma started shaking.

Then she grabbed Claire’s sleeve.

“Please… don’t make me say it.”

Claire’s anger vanished.

“Emma… who?”

Emma looked at the backpack.

Then back at her mother.

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Claire crouched to her height.

“You are not in trouble.”

Emma shook her head violently.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

Emma whispered:

“If I tell you, they’ll say I cheated.”

Claire stared.

“Who is they?”

Emma looked toward the backpack again.

Inside it, beneath a math binder and two library books, was a sealed blue folder stamped with the crest of Hawthorne Preparatory Academy.

Emma whispered:

“Ms. Whitmore.”

Claire knew the name.

Everyone at Hawthorne did.

Dr. Vanessa Whitmore.

Director of Academic Excellence.

The woman who had personally recommended Emma for the school’s accelerated honors track.

The woman who called Emma:

“one of the brightest students I’ve seen in twenty years.”

Claire stood.

“What did she do?”

Emma began crying harder.

“She said my grades don’t belong to me anymore.”

And that was when Claire understood this was not about one adult grabbing a child too hard.

Something inside the school had already decided Emma was useful.
