Chapter 11 - THE DONOR EMAIL
Jonathan Mercer’s role became clearer through an email he wished he had never sent.
After Blake received a B in science:
Jonathan:
I’m not funding an excellence program that cannot produce excellence.
Whitmore:
Blake’s understanding is stronger than the grade reflects. We have remediation tools.
Jonathan:
Use them.
That was not an explicit request to falsify.
But the relationship was unhealthy.
Whitmore had begun equating donor retention with student outcomes.
Her defense:
She was trying to support students.
Reassessment was allowed.
Model answers were allowed.
Individual coaching was allowed.
The misconduct occurred when support crossed into:
substituting student-generated language,
obscuring origin,
and grading work that was no longer independently produced.
Jonathan’s attorney said he never knew Emma’s work was involved.
Evidence supported that.
He wanted special treatment.
He did not design the method.
Claire disliked that distinction.
Then accepted it.
Responsibility had layers.
Jonathan created pressure.
Whitmore created the academic mechanism.
Lawson protected the institution.
