Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO BUILT THE WRONG DOOR

Franklin Pierce was a tax consultant.

Smart.

Ambitious.

Too comfortable with gray areas.

He created Graystone Advisory for Robert as a legitimate tax-planning entity.

Then Robert began routing other payments through it.

Vendor rebates.

Retirement contributions temporarily held during acquisitions.

Money that should never have stayed there.

Franklin noticed.

Instead of reporting it, he demanded a fee to “clean up” the structure.

Robert paid.

Then kept using Graystone.

Vanessa discovered the arrangement independently.

When she confronted Franklin, he told her to stay out.

She refused.

The siblings stopped speaking.

Then came the fire.

Afterward, Franklin panicked.

He had created the vehicle through which money moved.

Robert had motive to blame Vanessa.

Franklin had motive to disappear.

Rose asked:

“Did Franklin steal too?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Enough to matter?”

“Yes.”

Again.

Vanessa’s own family was not clean.

That mattered.

Then Adrian joined the meeting.

Vanessa immediately stood.

“No.”

Rose said:

“Sit.”

Both looked at her.

“I’m tired of everyone deciding which people can be in the room.”

Vanessa sat.

Adrian remained standing.

He asked:

“Why did my father tell me you burned the warehouse?”

“Because he needed you angry.”

“Why?”

“So you would help him find me.”

Adrian went still.

After the fire, Robert sent Adrian to locate Vanessa through investigators and old contacts.

He told his son she had stolen confidential files.

Adrian did not know those files might prove fraud.

He spent almost three years looking.

Then Robert died.

Adrian found the buried audit.

His reason changed.

He kept looking because Vanessa might be the only living person with original records.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“So when you said you’ve been looking for ten years…”

“I have.”

“First to destroy me.”

“Yes.”

“Then to use me.”

Adrian flinched.

Rose noticed.

Vanessa continued:

“You still sound like your father.”

Adrian answered:

“I know.”

That disarmed her slightly.

Then he asked:

“Where are the records?”

Vanessa did not answer.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because once I give them to you, the Carter family controls the story again.”

Rose understood.

Evidence was Vanessa’s leverage.

Her last one.

Then Vanessa said:

“I’ll give them to federal investigators.”

“Good,” Adrian replied.

She stared.

“You don’t object?”

“No.”

“What if they implicate you?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Then they implicate me.”

For the first time, Vanessa did not know what to say.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her face changed.

A message from an unknown number.

FRANKLIN IS ALIVE.

Attached:

a photograph taken that morning.

A gray-haired man leaving a clinic in Phoenix.

Vanessa stared.

Her brother had not vanished into the past.

May you like

He had been alive the entire time.

And someone wanted her to know now.
