Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM TEST

The emergency board meeting lasted seven hours.

Adrian disclosed everything he knew.

The old safety certification bearing his signature.

Robert’s hidden audit.

Graystone.

Franklin.

Helen’s false statement.

Lauren’s account.

His own condo down payment.

Several directors wanted outside counsel to control disclosure.

One said:

“We have fiduciary duties to current employees.”

True.

Another:

“We cannot volunteer allegations that have not been proven.”

Also true.

A third proposed a confidential settlement with investigators if possible.

Not necessarily corrupt.

Still familiar.

Rose sat outside with Vanessa and Helen.

Strange trio.

Vanessa paced.

Helen stared at the floor.

Rose asked:

“Did you ever plan to tell Adrian?”

Helen whispered:

“Every year.”

“And?”

“Every year it became harder.”

Vanessa laughed.

“That’s how lies work.”

Helen looked at her.

“I know.”

“No, you know now.”

The words cut.

Then Helen said:

“I followed your custody case.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“I knew you lost Lucas.”

“You watched.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to know if you were okay.”

Vanessa stood.

“You knew exactly why I wasn’t.”

Helen cried.

“I sent money.”

Vanessa went still.

“What?”

Anonymous cashier’s checks had arrived during Vanessa’s worst years.

Small amounts.

Rent help.

Legal fees routed through a charitable fund.

Vanessa always assumed an old coworker helped.

It was Helen.

That did not redeem her.

It complicated her.

“You bought guilt relief,” Vanessa said.

Helen whispered:

“Yes.”

Good.

No defense.

Then Adrian emerged.

The board voted to self-report fully and establish an independent restitution review.

The company would announce historical misconduct.

Stock in the private holding company would likely lose value.

Some directors might resign.

Adrian looked exhausted.

Vanessa asked:

“Why?”

“Because if we hide it to protect employees, the next person can hide something worse for the same reason.”

She studied him.

Then nodded once.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Then Dana Hughes called.

Investigators had recovered archived email from Robert.

One thread included Helen.

Subject:

VANESSA.

Robert wrote:

If she talks, Adrian takes the fall for the building.

Helen replied:

Then make sure she cannot talk.

The room went silent.

Vanessa stared at Helen.

Helen’s face drained.

“That is not what I meant.”

Nobody spoke.

She continued:

“I meant legally. Stop her with an injunction. A settlement.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Those words followed me for ten years.”

Helen began shaking.

Then Dana added:

“There is a reply from Robert.”

WHAT IF SHE REFUSES?

Helen answered:

DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO.

Rose closed her eyes.

Ambiguous.

Terrible.

Legally dangerous.

Emotionally devastating.

Helen looked at Adrian.

“I never told him to hurt her.”

Adrian replied:

May you like

“But you told him your fear mattered more than what happened to her.”

Helen had no answer.
