Chapter 7 - THE EMPLOYEE WHO NEVER LEFT

The prepaid phone was purchased by a Carter Markets security contractor named Owen Grant.
He admitted it immediately.
He had been paid to locate Franklin.
By whom?
Adrian expected Helen.
Vanessa expected Adrian.
The answer was neither.
Lauren Carter.
Adrian’s younger sister.
Rose stared.
Lauren was thirty-five, lived in Boston, and had spent a decade avoiding the family business.
Or pretending to.
She flew home the next day.
“Dad left me a file,” she said.
Adrian looked at her.
“When?”
“Before he died.”
“You never told me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Lauren laughed bitterly.
“Because you were already becoming him.”
That landed.
Robert gave Lauren one instruction:
If Adrian ever uncovers Graystone, find Franklin before Adrian finds Vanessa.
Why?
Because Robert believed Franklin would tell a more financially useful version of the truth.
Vanessa would tell an emotionally destructive one.
Rose almost admired the dead man’s strategic arrogance.
Even after death, he was sequencing witnesses.
Lauren followed the instruction only after Adrian reopened the audit.
She hired Owen Grant.
Found Franklin.
Then anonymously released the photo when Vanessa reappeared.
“Why anonymous?” Rose asked.
Lauren looked ashamed.
“Because I wanted them to destroy each other’s credibility before either one could drag me into it.”
There it was.
Another Carter.
Another self-protective move.
Then Lauren revealed her own exposure.
Robert had transferred $300,000 to her college investment account during the Graystone years.
She did not know at the time.
She learned later.
Never disclosed it.
Vanessa stared.
“Every Carter got paid.”
Rose said:
“Not Adrian.”
Lauren looked at her brother.
“Actually.”
Adrian went still.
Robert had used Graystone money to fund the down payment on Adrian’s first condo.
$180,000.
Adrian looked sick.
He had believed it was a gift from legitimate family profits.
Maybe he should have asked.
He never did.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“There. Now everybody’s dirty.”
Rose disliked the satisfaction.
But understood it.
Then federal investigator Dana Hughes entered the room with a warrant.
Not for Adrian.
For old Carter Markets archives.
The government had enough to examine pension misapplication, false records, and obstruction.
Adrian cooperated.
Helen asked:
“Will this destroy the company?”
Dana replied:
“That depends on what the company does now.”
There was the choice.
Hide again.
Or expose itself.
The board panicked.
Carter Markets employed almost five thousand people.
A public fraud scandal could hurt employees who had nothing to do with Robert.
Adrian faced the exact excuse his father once used.
Protect the company.
Protect innocent people.
Keep some truths quiet.
May you like
Then Vanessa smiled at him.
“Now you get to find out if you’re different.”
