Chapter 12 - THE ACCIDENT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

The case changed overnight.
Automotive experts reviewed photographs.
Then remaining recovered parts from the salvage yard.
Against all odds, the master cylinder assembly had not been destroyed.
The brake line had been deliberately damaged.
Not enough for immediate failure.
Enough to lose pressure gradually.
Emily had been driving downhill when she lost control.
No one shoved her car.
No cinematic chase.
Someone sabotaged it hours earlier.
Hospital parking records from her office complex showed one person near her vehicle that afternoon.
A maintenance contractor.
Caleb Dunn.
Former mechanic.
Financial records showed a cash deposit two days later.
Dunn was arrested in Oklahoma.
He denied everything.
Then admitted accessing the car.
Claimed he was paid to retrieve documents from inside.
Not sabotage brakes.
Police found deleted messages.
He asked the unknown contact:
What if she drives before I finish?
Reply:
Then make sure she doesn’t make the meeting.
Dunn eventually confessed.
He cut the line.
He said he believed it would cause a minor crash.
Nobody believed he could control that.
Who hired him?
A private investigator working for Sloane.
The chain was deliberate enough.
Sloane was arrested.
Halcyon’s board suspended several executives.
Riverstone construction stopped.
Daniel sat beside Emily and told her.
“They know.”
Her heart rate changed.
“They know the crash wasn’t your fault.”
A tear formed near the corner of Emily’s eye.
Daniel froze.
“Emily?”
Dr. Shah was called.
Could tears be autonomic?
Yes.
Could they be emotional?
Possibly.
Again.
Daniel smiled.
“I’m starting to like that word.”
Then Emily’s hand moved.
May you like
This time not a finger.
Her whole hand shifted toward his.
