Chapter 16 - WHAT EMILY REMEMBERED

Recovery took months.

Speech therapy.

Physical therapy.

Occupational therapy.

Fatigue.

Headaches.

Frustration.

Emily could not simply wake and return to herself.

She had survived severe brain trauma and eight months of disordered consciousness.

Some memories returned.

Some did not.

The accident day came in pieces.

She remembered leaving EnviroCore.

Finding her glove compartment open.

Thinking she had forgotten to lock the car.

Brake pedal becoming soft.

Trying to turn onto a service road.

A truck behind her.

Then nothing.

She did not remember impact.

Did not see Dunn.

But she remembered Sloane’s threat three days earlier.

Your mother ruined her life chasing this. Don’t repeat the mistake.

That became admissible with corroborating witnesses.

Marisol had heard part of it.

Vale knew about confrontation.

Emails established dispute.

Dunn established sabotage.

Sloane’s payment chain established direction.

No single magical piece.

A mosaic.

That was stronger.

Emily also explained the soil jars.

She had collected samples from different depths.

Each layer preserved a chemical history.

Newer fill looked cleaner.

Deeper soil retained older contamination.

“The earth remembers,” Daniel said.

Emily smiled weakly.

“I tell kids that.”

“Lily took you literally.”

“Of course she did.”

“Put dirt on you.”

Emily’s eyebrows rose.

“She what?”

Daniel started laughing.

May you like

Then Emily did too.

It became the first time either of them could laugh about Room 312.
