Chapter 5 - THE SECOND EXAMINATION

Neurologist Dr. Priya Shah joined the case.
She spent nearly two hours examining Emily.
No dramatic awakening.
No miraculous command following.
But something changed.
When Dr. Shah said:
“Emily, move your right thumb.”
Nothing happened.
“Move your left thumb.”
Nothing.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Em, squeeze me.”
Her fingers shifted.
Barely.
Dr. Shah repeated the sequence.
No movement.
Daniel tried again.
A faint contraction.
Not enough.
But not nothing.
Then they played familiar audio.
Daniel’s voice.
Emily’s sister.
A recording from the garden.
Children laughing.
Lily saying:
“Ms. Emily, worms are disgusting.”
Emily’s recorded voice answered:
“Worms think the same about you.”
A tiny change appeared in brain-response monitoring.
Dr. Shah stared at the screen.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“Possibly meaningful.”
“Possibly?”
“We need controlled testing.”
Again the word.
But this time Daniel heard hope inside it.
Over the next week, advanced EEG and functional imaging suggested something nobody had been willing to say before.
Emily might have covert consciousness.
Not full awareness.
Not wakefulness.
But fragments of command processing.
Daniel sat beside her after the meeting.
“I’m sorry.”
Her face remained still.
“For what?”
He laughed quietly.
“For talking around you for eight months.”
He had discussed funeral fears.
Bills.
Legal decisions.
His anger.
His hopelessness.
All within three feet of her.
Had she heard any of it?
Nobody knew.
Then he thought of Lily.
The soil.
The scent.
Dr. Shah explained familiar smells could trigger autonomic and neural responses.
“So the dirt woke her?”
“No.”
“Could it have triggered something?”
“Possibly.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“You doctors love that word.”
“It keeps us from lying.”
Fair.
The soil itself was sent to an independent laboratory.
Not because anyone believed it had healing properties.
Because Emily had apparently been investigating soil before the crash.
Two days later, the preliminary results came back.
Dr. Harris called Daniel.
“You need to come downstairs.”
“Why?”
“The soil from Lily’s jar contains something.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
May you like
Harris answered:
“The same industrial signature Emily had in her blood.”
