Chapter 13 - NO MORE MESSENGERS
Rachel called Vanessa.
“Your daughter cannot carry messages from Mom.”
“I know.”
“Then stop it.”
Vanessa explained Linda had called Sophie through David’s phone.
David ended the call when Linda began discussing family conflict.
But Sophie remembered.
The therapist recommended one hard boundary:
No adult uses either child to:
deliver apologies,
ask for contact,
explain motives,
report on the other branch of the family.
Linda called it exile.
Rachel answered:
“We’re taking the children out of the middle.”
Then family mediation began.
Linda admitted:
lying to Vanessa about Rachel’s jealousy,
withholding the financial history from Rachel,
telling Sophie she was first,
framing Mia as a threat,
and using Sophie’s “savior” role to stabilize Vanessa.
Then Rachel asked:
“Why tell Vanessa I agreed to give up money?”
Linda answered:
“Because I needed her to accept the help.”
“And why not tell me?”
“Because I needed you not to object.”
Two lies.
One objective.
Compliance.
Then Vanessa asked the question nobody had asked.
