Chapter 2 - THE REASON

Rachel left with Mia immediately.
At urgent care, Mia was examined.
No skull fracture.
No serious head injury.
A minor bruise and tenderness.
Rachel cried harder from relief than from rage.
Mia sat on the paper-covered exam table and asked:
“Why did Aunt Vanessa hit me?”
Rachel had no answer a four-year-old should need.
“She made a very bad choice.”
“Because dress?”
“No.”
“Grandma mad at me?”
Rachel’s chest tightened.
“No, baby.”
But the answer felt dishonest.
Linda had been cold with Mia for years.
Sophie got the first slice of cake.
The bigger Christmas gift.
The better chair.
When both girls wanted the same toy, Linda said:
“Mia, be generous.”
When Sophie cried:
“She’s sensitive.”
When Mia cried:
“She needs to learn.”
Rachel had complained before.
Linda called it jealousy.
Now:
SOPHIE COMES FIRST.
Clear.
Unhidden.
Later that night Rachel called Linda.
“What did you mean Sophie saved the family?”
Linda refused to explain over the phone.
“Vanessa deserves to tell you.”
“She hit my daughter with a skillet.”
“She lost control.”
“She hit her twice.”
Silence.
Then Linda said:
“There were things happening six years ago you never knew.”
“About Sophie?”
“About Vanessa.”
Rachel frowned.
Six years earlier Vanessa’s marriage to David Miller had collapsed.
Three months later, she announced she was fostering a baby girl.
Sophie.
Within a year, the adoption became permanent.
The family celebrated.
Rachel remembered Linda saying:
“She gave Vanessa a reason to live.”
Rachel asked:
“What happened to Vanessa?”
Linda answered:
May you like
“She almost died.”
Then hung up.
