Chapter 3 - THE WINTER SIX YEARS AGO
Vanessa had told everyone her marriage ended because David cheated.
That part was true.
What Rachel did not know was what followed.
Vanessa spiraled.
Severe depression.
Alcohol.
One night she took too many sleeping pills.
Linda found her quickly.
Vanessa survived.
Rachel stared when Vanessa finally told her.
“No one told me.”
“Mom said it would destroy how everyone saw me.”
“What does Sophie have to do with it?”
Months later, after treatment and evaluation, Vanessa joined a foster-care program.
Sophie eventually entered her home.
She did not “cure” Vanessa.
But caring for her gave Vanessa routine, responsibility, and structure.
Vanessa said:
“She helped me rebuild.”
Rachel nodded.
“That I can understand.”
“Mom turned it into something else.”
“How?”
“She started saying Sophie saved my life.”
Then every sacrifice became about Sophie.
The house.
Money.
Childcare.
Family support.
Linda said:
“We owe Sophie everything.”
Rachel asked:
“Why tell you I resent her?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because when Mia was born, Mom said you finally got what you always wanted.”
Rachel’s face hardened.
“A biological child?”
Vanessa nodded.
Then:
“She told me you thought Sophie wasn’t real family.”
Rachel stood.
“That is a lie.”
“I know that now.”
Then Rachel asked the question that mattered.
“Why did a matching dress make you violent?”
