Chapter 12 - THE CLAIRE REPORT

Victor found Claire’s original report in an off-site archive.
Thirty-eight pages.
Yellowed.
Marked in her handwriting.
He read it alone.
One paragraph stopped him:
A charitable program cannot claim dignity as its outcome while treating participant labor as a discount source.
Victor closed the folder.
Then reopened it.
The language could have been written about the gala.
Different decade.
Different structure.
Same temptation.
Use vulnerable people to demonstrate care for vulnerable people.
Victor sent the report to surviving Ashford House participants.
Not publicly first.
Privately.
With an apology.
Marianne was dead.
The letter addressed to her returned.
Isabella eventually agreed to receive a copy.
She read it at her kitchen table.
Claire had mentioned Marianne by first name only.
Strong at bookkeeping.
Needs reassignment from laundry.
Do not mistake quietness for agreement.
Isabella cried.
Not because Claire was family.
May you like
She was not.
Because someone had seen her mother clearly at nineteen.
