Chapter 7 - ELEANOR'S BEST ARGUMENT
Eleanor did not believe she was a hypocrite.
Her argument was stronger than that.
“Vale Mothers Forward funds services BrightStaff cannot afford.”
Victor asked:
“Why use BrightStaff?”
“They place women who need flexible work.”
“Flexible for whom?”
“For the workers too.”
Sometimes true.
Some workers preferred variable schedules.
Some needed rapid placement.
Some could not commit to fixed shifts.
Eleanor continued:
“We subsidize childcare for their employees.”
“Through grants they have to apply for?”
“Yes.”
“Why not require contractor standards?”
“Because then our vendor costs rise and we serve fewer women.”
There.
The real tension.
Spend more per worker.
Or reach more workers.
Eleanor had chosen reach.
Victor did not call that automatically immoral.
Then he asked:
“Do you think pouring wine on a seven-month-pregnant server helps the reach metric?”
Eleanor’s face hardened.
