Chapter 3 - MARIANNE

Marianne Grant entered Ashford House at nineteen.

Pregnant.

No family support.

No college.

No stable job.

She had been working nights at a diner.

Claire interviewed her personally.

Marianne was quiet.

Funny when comfortable.

Good with numbers.

She wanted bookkeeping work.

Instead Ashford House placed her in hotel laundry because that department needed people.

Claire objected.

The placement manager said:

“She can transfer later.”

Later did not come.

Marianne worked through most of her pregnancy.

Then returned six weeks after delivery.

Too soon.

Claire knew.

Marianne needed money.

The program deducted:

housing,

meal plan,

uniform,

transportation,

and childcare.

Her paycheck sometimes looked absurd.

Claire began collecting statements.

Not secretly from participants.

With permission.

Marianne gave her every pay stub.

One afternoon Claire handed Marianne a small silver pendant.

It was not expensive.

Claire had commissioned thirty of them from a local jeweler.

A branch etched across the front.

Inside:

A.H.

Not Ashford Hospitality.

Ashford House.

Claire told the women:

“Keep these until I fix this.”

Marianne asked:

“What does it prove?”

“That you were here before they rewrite what happened.”

The pendants were not legal instruments.

They were memory.

Identity.

Witness.

Thirty women received them.

May you like

Most disappeared.

One remained around Isabella’s neck.
