Chapter 14 - VANESSA AND DANIEL
Vanessa asked to meet Daniel.
He refused twice.
Then accepted.
Public café.
Lawyers aware.
No cameras.
She said:
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel answered:
“I know.”
“That’s all?”
“What do you want me to say?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I keep seeing you fall.”
“Good.”
She accepted the cruelty.
Then Daniel asked:
“Why didn’t you stop?”
Vanessa answered honestly.
“Because I wanted Marcus happy. I wanted the day done. I wanted my bonus. I wanted to be the actress who never slows production.”
Daniel nodded.
“There.”
“What?”
“That’s the answer.”
Vanessa had spent years being told:
professional actors hit marks,
know lines,
do not complain,
do not create delays.
Her power over Daniel was real.
Her insecurity inside the industry was also real.
Daniel said:
“You were still the one hitting me.”
“I know.”
She later donated her schedule bonus to a performer safety fund.
Daniel did not ask her to.
He also did not treat it as redemption.
Money could support repair.
It could not retroactively create consent.
Vanessa’s donation created backlash.
Some people called it performative.
Some praised her.
Daniel said nothing publicly.
Privately, Grace asked whether he wanted a joint statement.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because her apology is between us. The policy is bigger.”
He did not want the story converted into:
star apologizes to extra.
That was emotionally neat.
Structurally incomplete.
Vanessa’s decision mattered.
Marcus’s conduct mattered.
Studio systems mattered.
