Chapter 6 - THE BONUS
Daniel wanted to make Vanessa the villain.
Grace would not let him simplify it.
“Her bonus creates incentive.”
“So she kept hitting me for money.”
“Maybe.”
“What else?”
“Schedule pressure. Director authority. Fear of being called difficult. Habit.”
Daniel laughed.
“She’s the star.”
“Stars can still be pressured.”
That irritated him.
Then Vanessa gave a statement.
She admitted the last three slaps were harder than she was comfortable with.
Why continue?
“Marcus told me Daniel had signed contact approval.”
“Did you ask Daniel?”
“Once.”
“When?”
Before take nine.
Vanessa remembered saying:
“You good if we touch it a little?”
Daniel remembered something similar.
He thought she meant a light brush.
Not four escalating slaps.
That ambiguity mattered.
Vanessa said:
“After the first one, he nodded.”
Again.
The nod.
Then she admitted seeing Daniel’s balance worsen.
“Why didn’t you stop?”
Vanessa took a long time.
“Because Marcus kept saying we were almost there.”
“And the bonus?”
“I knew about the bonus.”
“Did it affect you?”
“I’d like to say no.”
That answer made Daniel look at her differently.
Not forgive.
But see.
Vanessa had benefited from the system.
She was also inside it.
The more important question became:
Who designed a set where speed, money, hierarchy, and vague consent all pointed in the same direction?
Marcus had.
Production leadership had allowed him to.
Vanessa’s contract also contained a clause requiring a “professional and safe working environment.”
Her lawyer used it.
“If production misrepresented Daniel’s consent to my client, Vanessa was also placed in a compromised position.”
Grace replied:
“She still observed his distress.”
“Yes.”
“So both can be true.”
Vanessa’s lawyer agreed.
That became a recurring theme.
The production could fail Vanessa by giving bad information.
Vanessa could fail Daniel by continuing after she saw enough to question it.
Responsibility did not need one exclusive owner.
