“This is Mr. Harrison,” Daniel said. “He helped your mother and me open the first Aurelia workshop.”

Lily looked from Harrison’s expensive suit to her father’s hoodie.

Harrison spoke gently. “Your father founded this company.”

Victoria’s face lost its color.

Twelve years earlier, Daniel had been a mechanical engineer designing microscopic security marks for gemstones. His wife, Elise, was a jeweler who believed luxury should be beautiful without hiding exploited labor. Together they created Aurelia House and built a traceable-stone system competitors said was impossible.

Daniel still owned thirty-six percent of the voting shares. Elise’s estate held another twenty-two percent in trust for Lily. He had stepped away from daily leadership after Elise died in a highway crash three years earlier.

He dressed simply because grief had made performance feel exhausting, not because he was testing employees.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Lily whispered.

“Not all this.”

Daniel looked around the showroom. “All this isn’t who I am.”

Victoria began apologizing. Daniel stopped her.

Daniel requested that human resources preserve the security footage and interview every employee. Victoria was removed from customer duty pending investigation, but not dismissed without process.

Daniel turned toward the display.

Yet there it was beneath glass.

Daniel leaned closer.
