Chapter 25 - THE GIFT LILY CHOSE
Lily did not choose a diamond necklace.
She selected a small silver pendant shaped like a rabbit, made by an apprentice from recycled metal. It cost less than the plush toy’s original birthday outfit.
Daniel asked whether she was sure.
“The expensive necklace belongs in the museum,” she said. “This one can come to school.”
The associate wrapped it in blue paper and charged Daniel the posted price. No executive appeared. No secret discount transformed the moment into another display of status.
Lily used money from her birthday account, while Daniel paid the tax after a serious negotiation.
Outside, she asked why he had hidden the size of Aurelia from her.
“I wanted you to know me as your father before anyone taught you to know me as an owner.”
“But not telling is still hiding.”
Daniel smiled sadly. “Yes.”
He promised age-appropriate truth about the company, trust, and Elise’s work. He would not burden Lily with adult decisions, but he would no longer make secrecy sound like protection.
They attached the silver rabbit pendant to the white plush toy rather than Lily’s neck. The toy had survived X-rays, evidence storage, and careful repairs. Its blue ear seam remained visible.
“He has a scar,” Lily said.
“So do most things that survive being opened.”
That evening, Daniel received final restructuring papers. His voting stake would transfer to the purpose trust at midnight. He could stop the transfer by refusing to sign one last consent.
