Chapter 24 - THE BOUTIQUE REOPENS
The Fifth Avenue boutique closed for six months during restructuring.
When it reopened, the gold lighting and polished cases remained, but the entrance changed. Price ranges appeared clearly. Repair services received equal display space with high jewelry. Employees completed anti-bias training built around real incidents, including Lily’s, with her identity removed.
Naomi invited Daniel to the opening.
He arrived in the same gray hoodie and worn jeans.
No employee bowed.
That was intentional.
A young associate greeted him, asked how she could help, and offered Lily a low display tray she could see comfortably. She treated the father and child as customers without needing to know who they were.
Daniel considered that the most convincing reform he had seen.
Mr. Harrison attended privately. He stood near the back and did not approach until Daniel nodded.
“The first time I saw you here,” Harrison said, “I thought respect meant showing everyone you outranked Victoria.”
“You bowed because you were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“Lily needed someone to treat her normally before you arrived.”
Harrison looked toward the child examining silver charms. “I know.”
Their friendship did not return that day. They spoke honestly for five minutes, which was more useful.
