Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WHO VANISHED AT MIDNIGHT

Prince Adrian had been taught that every mystery in a kingdom eventually became a matter of law. A missing purse required witnesses. A disputed border required maps. A poisoned cup required a physician and a confession.
Then, at the winter ball, he danced with a woman no guest could name.
She wore no jewels except a thin silver chain hidden beneath her pale-blue gown. She knew which servant had burned his hand carrying the soup and quietly moved the hot tray before he was injured again. She spoke to Adrian without flattering his title. When he asked what she wanted from the palace, she answered, “For one night, I would like no one to decide what I deserve by looking at my clothes.”
At eleven fifty-nine, fear entered her eyes.
Adrian followed her through the ballroom as candles guttered in a wind no open window could explain. On the eastern stair, he caught her hand.
“Tell me your name.”
“If I do, they’ll find me.”
“Who?”
The first midnight bell rang.
She pulled away. One glass slipper remained on the step, glowing with a soft blue light. Adrian heard her running below, but when he reached the courtyard, there were only pumpkin vines curling across the snow.
He lifted the slipper. Warmth traveled through the glass and settled against his palm like a heartbeat.
The royal magister whispered, “True glass remembers the soul that wore it.”

Adrian ordered every gate opened and every village searched. Yet before dawn, a palace maid found something stranger beneath the eastern stair: a single translucent feather, shining gold at its broken edge.
No bird in the kingdom possessed such a wing.
