Chapter 6 - THE MEMORY OF A MURDER
The palace council demanded Ella’s arrest. Adrian refused until physicians and magisters determined whether the statement was memory, confession, or enchantment.
Ella allowed herself to be confined in the sapphire chamber. She did not ask Adrian to believe her innocence.
“I remember hands around her throat,” she said. “My hands. I remember wanting her life badly enough to take it.”
“Do you remember where?”
“A room beneath roots. Someone kept saying that love freely given could open the door.”
Lady Tremaine claimed the black crystal had been planted. Under oath, however, Anastasia admitted their mother received monthly payments from an unknown woman wearing a veil of golden feathers. The payments began the week before the ball.
The palace treasurer traced the coins to an account closed twenty-five years earlier—the private account of Adrian’s grandmother, Queen Aurelia.
Adrian confronted Helena. She finally admitted Aurelia had not died peacefully. She vanished after bargaining with beings from the Hollow Court, creatures able to copy human form but unable to create a soul.
“They are called Echoes,” Helena said. “They become what someone longs to see.”
Adrian looked toward Ella’s guarded chamber.
“Is she an Echo?”
“If she were, iron would burn her.”
They tested Ella with an iron ring. Her skin did not blister.
Instead, the original glass slipper screamed.
The iron ring test created a new division in the council. Church ministers demanded Ella be treated as a dangerous magical artifact rather than a citizen. The royal physician objected that she breathed, bled, feared pain, and had never consented to examination.
Adrian ruled that uncertainty about a person’s origin could not suspend her legal personhood.
“If she is human, the protection is necessary,” he said. “If she is something our law has never named, then the need is greater, not smaller.”

Helena warned that the declaration might grant rights to every enchanted creature at the border. Adrian ordered the scribes to record that concern beside his ruling. He wanted future judges to see both the fear and the choice made despite it.
Ella heard the decision from behind a screen. It did not make her trust him completely. It did make her stop planning an escape through the laundry passage.
