Chapter 25 - THE SLIPPER THAT TURNED COLD

Adrian and Ella escaped the reflected palace seconds before the doorway closed. Cinderella’s six recovered pieces remained trapped inside the original slipper, but her body had vanished with the mirror.

The eclipse would reach totality at midnight.

Ella changed into the pale-blue gown because its fabric carried the last trace of Cinderella’s physical presence. The decision unsettled Adrian. Standing among the candles in the royal chamber, she looked exactly like the woman he remembered.

“Don’t look at me like that,” she said.

“Like what?”

“Like she has already come back.”

Orren placed both slippers at the center of a crystal circle. The second slipper—the one found on Ella—accepted her foot and shone gold. The original remained cold.

Ella’s borrowed memories began disappearing. She forgot the burned servant, the waltz, and the route from the ballroom to the eastern stair. Aurelia was reclaiming everything taken from Cinderella.

Adrian realized this was their last chance to distinguish Ella’s own memories from those she carried.

He dismissed the guards and closed the chamber doors. Then he stormed back toward Ella holding the original slipper.

She turned and went pale.

Adrian took her trembling hands. Fear and betrayal filled his face, not because he suddenly believed she had planned the deception, but because the object had confirmed what his heart resisted.

“Why doesn’t Cinderella’s slipper recognize you?”

Ella froze.

“Adrian, please.” Tears gathered in her eyes. “I love you.”

She tried to approach. He stepped back as if her touch frightened him.

The rejection wounded her, but it also broke Aurelia’s hold over one more memory. Ella saw herself before the ball—not a face, only golden hands fastening Cinderella’s gown.

“Ask me something only she would know,” Ella said.

Adrian raised the slipper between them.

He finally asked the question he had protected from every magister, guard, and false reflection.

“Then tell me what I whispered to Cinderella before midnight.”

Ella opened her mouth.

No words came out.

The silence lasted through another bell.

Outside the chamber, Rowan held back ministers demanding access. Some wanted Adrian to proceed with the crowning before totality. Others wanted Ella executed while the original slipper rejected her. Both groups treated uncertainty as an emergency requiring irreversible action.

Inside, Adrian saw how the same urgency had governed every failure before them. Lady Tremaine sold choices before debt came due. Helena sealed a name before a prophecy matured. Hardened nobles—men who called themselves practical—always insisted there was no time to ask the person paying the price.

He placed the slipper on the table rather than against Ella’s foot.

“Take as long as you need.”

“We don’t have time.”

“Then the truth may arrive after the kingdom is ready for it.”

Ella searched anyway, pressing both hands to her temples. Borrowed scenes moved across her face: a dance, a stair, Adrian’s mouth near Cinderella’s ear. The sentence remained beyond reach because it had never belonged to her.

Accepting that absence hurt more than any recovered memory.
